Death penalty

Post by its always the quiet ones on Tue Mar 27, 2007 11:02 pm

What's your opinion on the American death penalty?

this was a tough one for me, and recently i changed my opinion on it once i had heard both sides of the argument.

I agree.

If you were convicted for murder, that should be your penalty.

I'm not saying it should be like that for all crimes though.

But, for other crimes, they should recieve the death penalty as well.

Like, rape or molestation.

ok, here's my opinion. i agree that most of the people on death row actually deserve to die. but i'm uncomfortable with giving our government the power to do that. our government works for us, and something about giving it the right to take life just doesnt sit well with me.

so for me it's not a question of whether these people deserve to die, it's a question of what role the government takes.

...not to mention the death penalty is ineffective as a deterrent and less economical than life-time prison sentences.

Hm..you're right.

Killing them would be the easy way out.

I think that life sentences without any fun priveledges would be good.

In most prisons, the inmates are treated like royalty.

They're there to be punished, NOT to be pampered.

well ok look at it this way...
lets say you were married, had kids, blah blah blah.
lets say you come home and all of a sudden you get a call from the police.
"excuse me your son/daughter has just passed away. we'd like you to come down and blah blah blah..."
you later find out that it was intentional.
so YOU are telling me! that you would NOT want to see that person get his ass fried???!!!!.........

i dont think so...

If they are sentenced to death, they don't have to worry about anything.

Like, they'll just sit in a cell for how long, not having to care about their lives afterwards.

I have like, an actual coherent paragraph of this in my head, but I can't find the words..

of course i'd want to see that person get fried. i might even do it myself. but i dont want to give the government that power.
obviously i cant say how i'd feel if my entire family were killed by some one, but i really hope that i'd still be able to stick to my personal values

i agree. when dna testing came out people on death row were exonerated. once people are able to manipulate whose/whether dna is found, then we'll start making mistakes again until the next thing comes out. and that doesnt mean our system is perfect now -- dna testing isnt required for people on death row.

Okay.

My view has changed.

My boyfriend is extremely against the death penalty.

His dad is in jail for life [for what, i don't know. i didn't want to ask] and, he may get the death penalty.

Him and I talked for a while about it..

The death penalty is wrong to an extent.

If the person did something WORTH being killed for, then go for it.

But, if they did something less drastic, just give them a long ass time in jail.

Seriously.

...just hope they actually did it. if they're getting the death penalty then chances are they pleaded not guilty. so maybe the 12 people on the jury were wrong. then he/she is screwed.

I think it should be dependable and i think the way they kill the person should vary. Being poisoned is a quick way out where they might have tortured someone for hours, days or weeks before they finally killed them. I think if that person like shot four people they should get shot or if they raped and killed someone, they should be butt raped by a large gay man or banana or something. If they aren't going to die and killed someone, they should be in jail for life.

i just read this:
this guy on death row chose for his last meal to be a vegetarian pizza delivered to a homeless man in tennessee. the jail refused to do it because they said the taxpayers' money doesnt allow them to donate to charity.
they gave to guy on death row the choice of lethal injection or electric chair, but he refused to chose. he said "I'm not going to play no killing game."
he was executed by lethal injection today. he was found guilty of killing a police officer in 1982, but he has always said that the officer was killed by friendly fire.

i've never really thought of death row prisoners as real people before this.

theres no question the guy should go to jail, but why would somebody on death row who has no chance of getting off stick to his story that he shot the cop accidentally (he said he pulled the trigger by accident when he was shot)?
and even if there is no doubt at all that the guy did it, killing him won't change anything.
